A year ago, I took this portrait series of my son Diego when he turned 1 year old. One year later..same chair…same boy….amazing year!!

Sorry, I haven’t been updating the blog lately… But here’s some recent work with one of my favorite non-profits… Hundreds of people came out to volunteer at the Martin Luther King Day of Service at Belvedere Middle school in East L.A. in addition – hundreds of middle school students were sworn into 6 months of service with City Year.

I love this project that I’ve been working on over the past year…. I love photographing “first time events” in people’s lives…. We all have momentous events in our lives and although they are not all the same.. crossing these milestones can connect us as humans in their similarities. I would love people to tell me of any “firsts” that are coming up in their lives…. (I still need a “first” birthday party if you can believe it)… first recital, first lost tooth, etc. And this doesn’t only pertain to children… Do you know of a relative having a “first-time ” experience? Maybe learning a new skill, instrument or even a first date? Please let me know.. I’d LOVE to be there to document it! City Year Los Angeles is an organization that strongly believes in “give a year, change a life” In Southern California, four out of five third graders can’t read at grade level. And due to the lack of additional resources students that do not receive additional education support such as attending after school programs are 57% more likely to drop out of school and 27% more likely to become arrested.
City Year Los Angeles believes that you can change the course of these children’s lives by joining the City Year movement.

Tutors and mentors work in under-resourced neighborhoods where they become powerful role models. For more information…
